The Stages of Triskelion Alumni

By: Bro. Mitchell L. Flores, MDG

In my recent visit in Metro Manila, I had a chance to have a great conversation with Brod Ralph Barin, MDG of UP Diliman, batch 74'. I stayed at his house during that visit and we had an exciting exchange of ideas together with Brod Manny Gorospe, MDG. We covered almost everything about the fraternity, from the negative to the positive, but what struck me the most was when Brod Ralph shared his ideas about the stages of a Triskelion Alumnus.

Many times over, I've heard lots of complaints against our Triskelion Alumni. Complaints like: "Where were they during the dark days?" , or "Bakit ngayon lang kayo sumipot?" , or "Saan kayo nung kailangan namin kayo?", or "Wala na silang pakialam ngayon sa Frat" , and many more similar complaints. I was once thinking the same way, asking too many questions on the whereabouts of the Alumni. However, I felt so relieved when I heard the response of Brod Ralph Barin regarding these issues. He said that most Alumni during the 70's and 80's were still in a stage of building-up their respective careers, and time was truly a luxury for them. Like
himself he said, when he graduated from college, nurtured with the aim to Excel, he immediately looked for a job, and during those days as a young alumnus, he doesn't have the control of his time but his boss. He can't be absent from work and whenever requested to make overtime, he can't refuse in order to please his employer. The hurdle doesn't end there, because when he got married, the more that he needed to work harder for the sake of his family. Then kids came and in a period where he had to make plans for their future, trying to create a blueprint out of it. And after those long years of personal struggles, he said that he's now at a point of being stable, financially and psychologically. And it's only now that he has control of his time; that's why he is now coming back for the Fraternity.

On the other hand, we are all aware that there were also many Triskelion Alumni who sacrificed their careers for the sake of the Fraternity. I have to mention a few, like Brod Hernando Guevarra who made the ultimate sacrifice; Brod Boying Sudla, who spent his young years in prison, convicted of crime he didn't commit, but never pointed his fingers to the concerned brothers; Brod Dodong Encanto, Brod Manny Gorospe, including Brod Boy Limbago and Brod Mike Molino, are some of the Triskelion Alumni whom we can consider to have sacrificed their chances to build-up their careers for the sake of the Fraternity. There are many more brothers like them, and for that alone, we are obliged to show them our appreciations.

But we have to be equally thankful for the Triskelion Brothers who have chosen to spend time in building-up their careers, because if they did otherwise, we won't have Brothers now like: Sen. Ralph Recto, Cong. Raffy Nantes, Sultan Jerry Laut, Mayor Jim Salliman, Mayor Bong Teves, Atty. Monching Ocampo, Engr. Ralph Barin, Engr. Cesar Mercado, Brod Dod Peralta, our Four Founding Fathers, the members of the Triskelion Chamber of Commerce, and many many more.

Yes, we have to be thankful in spite of their long absence because they are now coming back; stronger, rejuvenated, and fully evolved.

Therefore we can consider at least three stages of the Triskelion

Alumni:

1) The Commencement Stage;
2) The Building-up Stage; and
3) The Stability Stage.

The Commencement Stage - is where a newly graduated Alumnus just had the first job and receiving a minimum wage but doesn't have control of his time. This is the stage where one is still testing the waters and trying to please his superiors by rising-up to every challenge at hand; trying to make an impression and make a name to be respected.

The Building-up Stage – is where an Alumnus is earning fairly but still trying to make a blueprint of his life. The future is still cloudy at this point and this is where one is thinking of having a family. Time is still very luxurious at this stage but can spare some of it for the Fraternity in one time or another. Physical presence and participation in the Fraternity are very slim, and we can't expect a lot of it at this point. This is the time where a Triskelion Alumnus has to exert all efforts to excel in his chosen field of interest and endeavor.

The Stability Stage – is where an Alumnus has completed the Blueprint of his life and already financially and psychologically stable. He can already calculate the outcome and the consequences of his actions. This is the stage where a Triskelion Alumnus is capable of spending an entire day for the fraternity without the danger of compromising his family. This is the stage where a Triskelion Alumnus has to come back for the Fraternity
